Swinton’s distortions are few in Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac. In fact, his book is exceptional among immediate postwar publications for its commitment to objectivity. Swinton even consulted Confederate records and corresponded with James Longstreet about Gettysburg. He concluded that Robert E. Lee was largely to blame for the defeat. This book is not for the casual Civil War reader. It is pages of minutiae on the establishment and first combat (Bull Run) of what would become the Army of the Potomac, until McClellan takes command in August/September Beatie's writing is very dry, but interesting/5(2).

The first unit designated as the V corps was organized briefly under Nathaniel P. Banks (Banks's original command opposed Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign and ultimately became XII Corps.). The unit better known as V Corps was formed within the Army of the Potomac on as V Corps Provisional, which was engaged in the Peninsula Campaign to seize Richmond. Charged with the defense of Washington, D.C.—and therefore under the eyes of the politicians from first to last—the Army of the Potomac was blessed with a rank-and-file firmly committed to.
